Doar Drives Off to 40th Career Challenge Series Triumph in Ogilvie

The 2023 season for the Structural Buildings WISSOTA Late Model Challenge Series rolled into the Ogilvie Raceway in Ogilvie, MN for the first night of the 2nd annual XR Northern Storm week and Pat Doar continued his stranglehold on Ogilvie by sweeping the night after setting fast time, winning his heat race and coming out on top of a mid-race battle with Dustin Sorensen for the lead and then pacing the final 17 laps for his 40th career victory.

Doar started the night by setting fast time with a lap of 15.626 seconds around the banked oval, while he, Dave Mass, Sorensen and Travis Budisalovich topped the four qualifying heat races early in the night’s program.

Doar and Sorensen earned the front row for the night’s 40-lap, $2,000-to-win feature event with Doar getting the upper hand on the initial start and leading the field into turn number one before Sorensen powered by on the high side of the speedway to take command as the field completed the third circuit.

Sorensen then paced the field around the top side of the track for the next twenty laps with Doar in second, while Budisalovich and Mass were in a great battle for third just behind.

The lone caution of the 40-lapper flew on lap 20 for debris on the front stretch and on the restart, Doar drove under Sorensen into turn two before Sorensen was able to take the lead back on the low side of turn four. The two battled side by side for the lead over the next two laps until Doar was able to work higher than Sorensen on lap 22 and took command for good.

Once out front, Doar began to stretch his lead, while Budisalovich was able put Mass behind him and work on Sorensen for second. Budisalovich took second on lap thirty and Mass stole third a lap later.

Sorensen held strong in third, while Jake Redetzke, Kevin Burdick and Dan Bargender were in a good battle just behind. Redetzke was able to come out on top of that tussle and appeared in the top five on lap thirty-seven.

Back out front, Doar raced to the win with Budisalovich a close second at the checkered flag. Mass crossed the line third, just ahead of Sorensen and Redetzke in the top five. The win solidified Doar as the series point leader heading into the Tuesday event in Hibbing.

Jason VandeKamp won a thriller of a Midwest Modified feature, while Dave Cain won a great Modified feature as well.
