With thousands of drivers competing across WISSOTA each season, every driver has a story worth telling. The WISSOTA Driver Spotlight series gives fans a closer look at the people behind the helmets—offering insight into their racing programs, backgrounds, and personalities. All featured drivers answered the same questions.

Our first driver in the WISSOTA Driver Spotlight series is Layla Chaplin. The Cameron, Wisconsin racer just completed her first-year racing a WISSOTA Street Stock, but has been racing for over 5 years.

What is your home track?
Rice Lake Speedway

What’s been your most memorable race or win so far?
Getting my first heat race win in the Street Stock at Greenbush Race Park on July 19.

What’s one lesson racing has taught you that applies to life?
Patience

What’s your pre-race ritual or superstition?
I pregame a Blue Raspberry Sucker.

What’s your favorite non-racing hobby?
Softball

If you had an unlimited budget, what would you race and why?
Modified. I want to beat my Dad!

One fun fact about you that fans would be surprised to know?
I’m undefeated at Mario Kart!

What is your favorite racetrack food?
Walking Taco

What is the story behind your car number?
Pit guy and family friend, Don Folz, is the original number 86. He’s been friends with my grandpa since their teenage years. Don last raced in 2002.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about racing?
That winning is easy, and it’s just like driving a regular car.

What was the biggest misconception you had about racing before you started?
That you can just hold it wide open.

What advice would you give to a new driver just starting out?
Don’t make enemies right away.

What WISSOTA event do you most want to win?
The Street Stock Little Dream

What’s one thing you wish every fan understood about drivers?
We are human and we make mistakes.

Please tell us your favorite racing story?
Qualifying for the Friday Night Feature at the WISSOTA 100 this past September. We finished 4th in our heat and started 24th in the qualifying feature. We finished in 16th!
